Downtown Phoenix, AZ Community

It’s wonderful to see how Phoenix schools and communities come together to show gratitude for our veterans. As 2025 approaches, a variety of events are planned to honor their service, and it’s especially heartening to see young people getting involved. These initiatives not only teach students about the sacrifices made by those who served but also foster a sense of community pride and respect. From essay contests to special game days, there are many ways for everyone to participate and show their appreciation.

This year’s efforts aim to create meaningful experiences for both veterans and the wider community. It’s about more than just a day of recognition; it’s about building lasting connections and understanding. These events provide excellent opportunities for families to learn together and for students to reflect on the importance of service. We’re looking forward to a series of impactful and memorable occasions that will truly celebrate our nation’s heroes right here in Phoenix.

Arizona State University (ASU) is also gearing up for its annual “Salute to Service” week. This is a significant event that often includes a prominent football game, like their matchup against West Virginia, dedicated to honoring military members and veterans. Beyond the game, the week is packed with activities designed to celebrate and support student veterans on campus. It’s a comprehensive effort to acknowledge their unique experiences and challenges.

During “Salute to Service” week, ASU shines a spotlight on the stories of their own student veterans. This allows the wider university community to connect with and understand the journeys of those who have served and are now pursuing their education. These personal narratives are incredibly powerful and help foster a supportive environment for veterans as they transition into academic life. You can often find updates and highlights on ASU’s official social media channels.

Community colleges are also stepping up with heartwarming tributes. GateWay Community College plans to host its own Veterans Day celebration. This event typically includes a touching flag ceremony, a powerful way to pay respect to the nation’s colors and those who have defended them. Following the ceremony, attendees can enjoy a community lunch, providing a relaxed setting for everyone to connect and share their appreciation for our veterans.

Estrella Mountain Community College (EMCC) is hosting its 12th Annual West Valley Veterans Day Ceremony and 5K/1-mile Run/Walk on November 11, 2025. This event is a fantastic way to get active while supporting a great cause. Proceeds from the run benefit the Dr. Ernest Lara – EMCC Veterans Scholarship Fund, which helps student veterans with their education costs. You can also expect family-friendly activities from the City of Avondale’s Police and Fire Departments. Check out the EMCC website or their social media for more details on packet pickup and registration.

We encourage everyone to participate in these events to show support for our veterans. Have you attended any of these events in the past, or are you planning to go in 2025?
